Last year I went viral for the first time. Not for my art. For a pair of boots.

The demographic paying the most attention was men. And it was about my body, how I looked and what I was wearing.

These themes have been staring me in the face my whole life. Yes, maybe the way I look is a tool, but it’s my tool to use when I choose. Right?

When does a woman get to choose how she’s seen? When does a woman get to decide what people are actually looking at? Do we really get to choose our paths in life, or is it decided for us by others, or even worse, an algorithm?

Anaïs is six figurative oil paintings alongside text-based canvas works and a digital element exploring identity, the female body, performance and choice.
